August Film meetings
In August - the month of the Olympics in Rio - feel invited to a series of film meetings dedicated to the culture of Brazil, in particular to its music and architecture.
August film meetings are organised in partnership with the Brazilian Embassy in Warsaw (http://www.brasil.org.pl/).
All the films will be screened in original audio with English subtitles.

TROPICÁLIA, 2012, 87 min

A documentary film treating of the troubled 1960s Brazil and of an artistic movement that evolved then and that later on came to be known as Tropicalia. The film is comprised of recordings, photos, interviews and recently discovered archive material documenting the 1967-69 period and focusing on the early career of such esteemed Brazilian performers as Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso.

Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim, also known as Tom Jobim, is one of the outstanding personalities of the Brazilian music scene, creator of the bossa nova genre and the composer of the world-famous “Girl from Ipanema”. The film presents among others the influence of classical music on the creative output of Jobim and his relationship with poet Vinicius de Moraes.

The film tells the story of Arnaldo Baptista, one of the founders of the legendary Brazilian group Os Mutantes. Initially associated with the Tropicalia movement, the band ceased to exist in 1972, primarily due to drugs, which took its heavy toll on the private lives of the bandmates. The film shows the rise, fall and creative comeback of one of the most interesting Brazilian artists.

Oscar Niemeyer is a Brazilian architect informed by modernism. The film presents the icons of modern Brazilian architecture but primarily it focuses on the architect himself. For that reason, the filmmaker conducted a series of interviews with Oscar Niemeyer, during which the architect talks about his work, about how he revolutionised modern architecture through the introduction of curved lines and implementation of steel in his projects as well as about his ideals and espousal of social order.
